Companies look to Education City to Upskill Staff

Date: 10 December 2009

Springfield Land Corporation has partnered with some of Education City’s learning providers in order to take advantage of the up skilling opportunities offered by the tenants of this unique education campus.

Four staff from Greater Springfield’s masterplanners are currently enrolled in courses at Education City’s Prime Learning.

Amanda Prove, Leah Thomas, Lana Matoe and Chloe Neven are thankful for the chance Springfield Land Corporation has given them to broaden their education while in full time employment.

“I am very eager to earn this Certificate and extend my knowledge to develop in both Business Administration and this innovative company which poses endless opportunities,” Ms Thomas said.

Ms Thomas, 20, is currently completing a Certificate III in Business Administration whilst maintaining a full time position as Administrative Assistant.

Springfield Land Corporation’s Executive General Manager for Education and Health, Terry Kearney, said it was crucial that the learning experience should continue throughout the professional years if staff wanted to engage in continuous improvement.

“The courses offered by Prime Learning and other training providers in Education City allow people to continue to expand their knowledge or prepare themselves for a career change,” Mr Kearney said.

Ms Prove, 22, said she felt privileged to be able to study for her course (Certificate IV Business Administration) with Springfield Land Corporation’s support behind her.

“I find Prime Learning to be very helpful and supportive and I feel confident in what I am studying thanks to the help they have given me,” Ms Prove said.

The Springfield Land Corporation staff chose to undertake the training at Prime Learning after MEGT (acting on behalf of the Federal Government) recommended the courses after liaising with the staff and understanding their needs and goals.

MEGT’s Ron Russell said they viewed their location within Education City as a strategic alliance in providing a complete service to businesses that invest in the increased skills of their staff.

"As a government-contracted service, MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre provides free advice, on and administration of, traineeships and apprenticeships.

"We help businesses with all the formal documentation required for their apprenticeships and traineeships as well as training for existing workers. We expect requests for our service to increase as the city of Greater Springfield and the booming western corridor continue to grow,” Mr Russell said.

Chloe Neven has recently completed a Certificate III in Business Administration after signing up with MEGT Australian Apprenticeship Centre in August 2008 to do a work-based traineeship certificate.

“I was given six hours work time per week to study and I also met with my trainer MEGT once every three weeks to see how I was going and if I had any questions.

“I have now have a qualification to show that I was able to do while working full time,” Ms Neven said.

Lana Matoe “jumped at the chance” to study a Certificate IV in Business Administration in her quest to pursue a career in accountancy.

“It is a great opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and further my career.

“I am grateful to Springfield Land Corporation and MEGT for giving me this wonderful opportunity to complete this certificate and look forward to future prospects,” Ms Matoe said.

MEGT can help employers upskill their existing staff, employ new staff and invest in their business’ future through employing apprentices and trainees.

MEGT also helps job seekers make themselves more employable, gain additional skills or find a job and can help existing workers gain additional skills.
